Remastered as the first in a series of forthcoming digital releases, the ‘Superhero’ EP is where LWED’s story began…
British electronic duo Living With Eating Disorders release ‘Superhero’, their first in a series of forthcoming digital releases. The Superhero EP provides remastered tracks that were originally sold exclusively at shows or through the band’s website. These early recordings subsequently caught the attention of John Fryer – producer for the likes of Depeche Mode, Cocteau Twins and Nine Inch Nails, who then signed the band to his label ‘Something To Listen To’, where upon renaming themselves ‘Colt’, the band released their debut ‘These Things Can’t Hurt You Now, So Throw Them in The Fire’ in 2005.
Now back under the original name, Superhero will act as a catalyst for revisiting some of the duo’s earliest work.
The EP’s opener ‘Menace’ proves to have a fitting title – it evokes a feeling of being in the presence of something sinister and unsettling, all the while providing the listener with a notion that can be likened to drifting in and out of a dream-like state… It’s earie and intoxicating, as singer Andrea Kerr’s vocals majestically entwine with Jared Hawke’s synthetic ambience which meld into something both enchanting and gothically cinematic.
‘Dark Nevada’ takes us further into the stirring abyss, with chilling piano notes creeping under the portrait of a cold and inhospitable landscape, again, this music is as visually piercing as it is sonically inciteful – beautiful, dark and obscure.
‘Arm’ is the final of the 3 tracks, at just one 1:03 in total, it is a whisper of diminutive Lo-Fi sombre – sweet and melancholic, it ends with the line “you’re my strength I’ve found my way, you’re my path I need to stray” – a message of hopeful optimism despite its dejecting tone.
Overall, Superhero delivers to us something eerie and chilling yet remains captivatingly emotive and delicately moving, it taps into the awe and reverence of a soul endearing those they love and those they may have lost, it paints a picture of strength in a time of desperation – this music is as relevant now as when it was first written, but you have to be in the right mood to get in the headspace for this one… 4/5
