ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL PREVIEW: SUMMER OF ’69 – PEACE AND LOVE

Introducing a theme of Summer Of Love ’69 this year’s Isle Of Wight headliners include – Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, George Ezra, Biffy Clyro, and Fatboy Slim, perfectly suited main stage performers to heighten the feeling of nostalgia from the iconic 1969 event of 50 years ago. This featured none other than Bob Dylan and The Who, and included a guest list of historic icons such as John Lennon, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Elton John and more – it was definitely one to mark in the history books – just as this year’s event will be.

Joining the headliners the full line-up will also include: Lily Allen, Bastille, Anne-Marie, Rick Astley, Sundara Karma, Richard Ashcroft, Jess Glynne, Madness, Sigrid, Tom Walker, Keane, Jax Jones, and more. Inclusive to this will be music tributes to Bob Dylan, with a featured a look into the past from themed areas, and a look into the future with others.

Building on its proud heritage of 51 years, this year’s festival, marking the start of summer, takes place June 13th – 16th at Seaclose Park, Newport. 

With a backstage tour and champagne picnic up for grabs; attendees are encouraged to dress in their best 60’s attire – bell bottoms included! Best dressed will be crowned “King or Queen of Summer” in the Strawberry fields at 2pm Saturday 15th – keep an eye on IOW socials for details (see links below).

Headlining the opening night, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds return to the stage at IOW for the first time since 2012, and close out the night on Friday 14thJune. Since embarking on a solo career, Noel has released 3 studio albums, all debuting at number 1 in the UK Album Charts. Most recently, Noel’s latest album ‘Who Built The Moon’ broke records by becoming his 10th consecutive UK chart topper, a feat achieved by no other artist to date.

Saturday 15thJune will see British singer-songwriter George Ezra headline the main stage, marking his first major UK festival headline performance as a 7 time BRIT-nominated artist. With just 6 years in the spotlight, there is an ever evolving achievement list behind headliner Ezra, including his debut album ‘Wanted On Voyage’ certified as a 4x platinum record in the UK, it became one of the biggest selling albums of 2014 and 2015 after hitting number 1 and remaining in the charts for a phenomenal run of 122 weeks. Following this, sophomore album ‘Staying at Tamara’s’, became the best-selling album of 2018 after also sky rocketing to the top of the charts.

Marking his IOW debut, Fatboy Slim will continue the party into the night following George’s performance in a special guest slot.  Awarded with 2 BRIT awards, a GRAMMY, and an Ivor Novello for Outstanding Contribution to British Music – his explosive live DJ set will include a blend of house, acid, funk, hip-hop, electro, and techno.

Bringing the festival to a close, Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro will headline the main stage Sunday 16thJune, returning for the first time since 2014. With an undeniable passion for music, the trio have amassed countless awards and nominations – including a Hyundai Mercury Prize shortlisting for album ‘Only Revolutions’, a Q Award for Best Live Band, 2 BRIT Award nominations, 4 NME Awards wins and 4 Kerrang Award wins. In addition, frontman Simon Neil secures the Fender Play Award at the Q Awards 2018, celebrating artists at the forefront of the current guitar music scene. Biffy Clyro have an impressive back catalogue of music – including 7 studio albums, with 4 hitting top 3 of the UK Album Charts, and an 8thin the works for 2019. The perfect close out to the weekend while the sun sets.
