Mac Demarco at The Piece Hall, Halifax – Live Review

Mac DeMarco was the first headliner in a series of events at The Piece Hall, Halifax, over the weekend. He was supported by Yellow Days, Amyl and The Sniffers and West Yorkshire born, Working Men’s Club.

After a miserable week of wet weather, the sun was shining without a cloud in sight. The historic open courtyard set the scene perfectly to what was going to be a bumper packed night of great music.

Local band, Working Men’s Club, opened the night with material from their post-punk debut single ‘Bad Blood / Suburban Heights’. Melbourne based punk band Amyl and The Sniffers followed up with an energetic performance, playing fan favourites ‘I’m Not A Loser’, ‘Cup Of Destiny’ and ‘Some Mutts (Can’t Be Muzzled)’. Yellow Days provided soothing soul filled music from the highly rated ‘Harmless Melodies EP’, the perfect warmup for what was about to come.

Headliner act Mac DeMarco took to the stage with cheers of admiration from his loyal fans. Mac and his band started their set with the synthesizer driven track ‘On The Level’. A sea of swaying green caps could be seen from front to back, clearly the merch stall had been ransacked by his fans wanting to imitate his image. Mac was in good form, swinging around his microphone whilst bobbing to the infectious rhythms.

Mac picked up his guitar, leading into the next song ‘Salad Days’. The crowd were in great spirit singing along to “La la la la la, oh oh oh”. ‘Cooking Up Something Good’ led to the occasional pint whizzing through the air and ‘My Old Man’ saw Mac DeMarco encouraging fans to sing along to the chorus “Uh-oh, looks like I’m seeing more of my old man in me”.

The crowd were taken on a funk trip with ‘Choo Choo’ from the latest album. Whilst fan favourites ‘Ode to Viceroy’, ‘Freaking Out The Neighborhood’ and ‘Chamber of Reflection’ had the sun soaked audience singing along from start to finish.

The Canada based band ended the first night at The Piece Hall with covers of The Beatles, Rage Against The Machine, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Misfits.

The entertaining performance was equipped with the typical humour and in-jokes you would expect to hear from Mac and his band. A mixture of great weather, beautiful surroundings, and charismatic performance left everybody feeling like it was money well spent.
