INTRODUCING – Sasami

THE BACK STORY: Sasami Ashworth’s debut solo LP came out earlier this year, though you could hardly describe her as a newcomer to the music industry. Over the past decade, the LA-based musician has scored short films and commercials, and collaborated in the studio with artists like Vagabon, Hand Habits and Wild Nothing. Most notably, of course, she was a member of Cherry Glazerr, adding synths to the band’s jittery garage-rock songs.

It was during her time with Cherry Glazerr, whilst on touring duties, that 28-year-old Sasami first began to write solo material – songs that would eventually make up her brilliant eponymous debut album, released back in March on Domino Records. Recorded in LA and featuring guest appearances from several musician pals (Devendra Banhart, Beach Fossils’ Dustin Payseur, Hand Habits’ Meg Duffy), it’s an album which fully vindicates her decision to strike out as a solo artist. Propelled by her hushed, delicate vocals, ethereal melodies and lyrics of wrought introspection, Sasami’s debut deftly straddles the worlds of 90s noise-rock and contemporary leftfield pop.

Having spent the past 12 months touring non-stop, supporting artists such as The Breeders, Liz Phair and Blondie, Sasami is back on the road for a massive American and European tour in the autumn. Her transition from behind the scenes to centre stage has, it’s safe to say, been a seamless one.

KEY TRACK: ‘Callous’ – a stirring, shoegazey epic in which Sasami picks apart a failing relationship with searing honesty.
