WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK?

WE’RE BACK AND IT’S OUR THIRD FAVOURITE DAY OF THE WEEK – THURSDAY!

I feel like I’ve had a bit of verbal diarrhoea this week, with lots to say about the things I have found, so maybe grab a cuppa or something of equal soul-warming capacity for this one. There’s some really great stuff on this upcoming week as we’re nestled into the depths of this winter’s gig season, so have a little nosey and see what tickles your fancy – an early (ahem, very) Christmas present from you to you, perhaps?

MANCHESTER

YES (THE PINK ROOM) – WOLFGANG FLUR & PETER DUGGAL

15/11/19

Ex-Kraftwerk member, during the group’s golden era, Wolfgang Flür is coming to Manchester alongside Peter Duggal. Flür was the band’s electronic percussionist, from Frankfurt, and was the third member of the band in 1973 – a replacement for the drum machine. He was a member of the group at perhaps the pinnacle of their success, from their international breakthrough courtesy of album Autobahn (1974) and remained a member of the group as they experimented on more proto-techno albums such as Trans-Europe Express (1977) and Computer World (1981). He’ll be joined by Peter Duggal, musician and producer, who is based in Hebden Bridge. It’s at the Pink Room, so be ready to enjoy some banging tunes in a lovely little room.

Twenty photographs will be featured from twenty years of music photography from 1999 to 2019. The exhibition officially opens tomorrow, but there will be a private viewing tonight and a closed bidding on Kelly’s infamous ‘Free Ian Brown’ print. Stay tuned for a write-up on the evening!

This exhibition is free to attend, the address is below.

O2 APOLLO – SNARKY PUPPY

15/11/19

The three-time Grammy award winning, genre defying collective are returning to Manchester, in celebration of their latest album Immigrance, released 15/03/19 via GroupUP Music. The LP was a studio project, predominantly about movement, with emphasis on simpler and streamlined music. League, who founded Snarky Puppy back in 2003 explains the album: “The idea here is that everything is fluid, that everything is always moving and that we’re all in a constant state of immigration”. A band that is no stranger to diversity, the performances showcase a variety of experiences and strengths in a way that is beautifully cohesive.

OMEARA – DAYLIGHT (ACCESSIBLE JUNGLE / DRUM & BASS)

16/11/19

Hosted by London DJ and mental health volunteer Tony Gurney, this is one of the first accessible dance event for adults with disabilities. Gurney lives with both Crohn’s disease and rheumatoid illness fibromyalgia, and was also a child carer to his older brother who had both spina bifida and hydrocephalus, who died of his disability in 2000. Gurney has experienced first hand the difficulties of going to a nightclub or music event as a disabled person, and is determined to change the stigma and ensure that those who live with a disability have the chance to enjoy music in a space that is controlled and safe. The venue will have an hour before hand for everyone to get in and get settled, and an hour at the end for everyone to get their coats – the venue also has food onsite which is a huge bonus. Tickets are a fiver (carer goes free) and you just need to have your blue badge with you, or proof of disability. What a wonderfully thoughtful event.

BRISTOL

THE CUBE – GRAHAM DUNNING MECHANICAL TECHNO

15/11/19

Graham Dunning is a self-taught artist and musician, having actually never studied either discipline academically. In his live work, he explores sound as texture and timbre, drawing on a bedroom production style combined with visual work, videos and installations. He notes than when he performs live he is “using the Mechanical Techno method. Several looping records spin on the same axle, ensuring their stay approximately in time with each other. [He layers] up locked groove records, audio triggers to analogue synths, mechanically played percussion, and mechanically triggered drum machines”.
