Isle Of Wight Festival 2019 – Artist Interviews

SUMMER OF ’69 – PEACE AND LOVE

Stepping backstage to talk to Absolute Radio – Noel Gallagher, The Courteeners, George Ezra, Rick Astley, KT Tunstall, Keane and Fatboy Slim shared some stories their festival experience…

Noel Gallagher

“I’d rather eat my own shit than watch him murder his songs”

Whilst talking to Pete Donaldson and Sarah Champion, Gallagher spoke about captaining the ferry over to the Isle Of Wight, and somewhat laid into his brother Liam…

Noel on if he’d rather watch Man United win a quadruple, or watch Liam at Wembley doing only his new stuff:

“I think I’d rather eat my own shit… than watch either. I’d rather put shit on a pizza and be force fed it than listen to that bozo fucking murder his own songs … I’d do it in disguise though, I’d get dressed up like a fisherman and go to one of his gigs with four pairs of sunglasses on. I’d be like ‘fuck off, no you fuck off, you fuck off, no you fuck off.’ I’ll slowly watch burning an effigy in myself being hoisted above the stage at some point”.

On captaining the ferry over to the festival:

“I was on the ferry with Peter Hook. I can’t say what actually happened because somebody will get the sack. I had the hat on and I thought, you know I’ve got the hat on now, you know let’s bring her in! I got on the mic: ‘would the foot passengers please form an orderly queue and vehicle passengers can you queue up by the gangplank”.

The Courteeners

Joining Danielle Perry backstage, The Courteeners front man Liam Fray discussed the euphoric response they feel from crowds at their gigs, and how is this era is their best one yet…

On the euphoric responses at their gigs, Liam said:

“It is nice. It’s weird cause it’s a communal thing, there’s a lot of division going on at the minute and it feels like music is the one thing where people go and go and forget stuff for an hour or a few days or whatever. It feels like everyone’s rooting for the same team”.

On their new sound, Liam said:

“I feel that with our third album we went up a notch, you know? I feel like we’ve done that again. We’ve kicked it up a gear. It feels like we’ve gone somewhere different”.

George Ezra

Sitting down with Dave Perry, George Ezra revealed who he’d call if he found a dead body in his car, and the reason he’d be sitting on a stool for his headline performance…

George on whether he’d choose Rag n Bone Man or Lily Allen to call if he had a dead body in his car boot:

“I went for a jog yesterday morning, and rolled my ankle. Instantly knew that something was wrong … My thought process was ‘that hurts a lot – oh its the Isle Of Wight tomorrow’ … It was my annual run. I set my alarm and thought ‘Oh today feels good’, how wrong I was”.

George on whether he’d choose Rag n Bone Man or Lily Allen to call if he had a dead body in his car boot:

“I’ve only spent an hour or so with Lily but she seemed very cool and a calm head in that situation. I’m not saying she’s got previous with this kind of situation but it seems like she wouldn’t flap. I’m not saying that Rag ‘n’ Bone would – but I can imagine me and Rory kinda looking at each other like, ‘I don’t know!’ ”

Rick Astley

Sarah Champion chatted backstage to Rick Astley about touring with Take That, being asked to perform at this years festival, and a drunken karaoke moment with legend Kim Wilde…

On touring with Take That:

“The touring with Take That was amazing. Absolutely incredible… we were really lucky because it was an amazing tour to get invited onto and their fans are fanatical.”

On being asked to perform at Isle of Wight Festival:

“It is my first Isle of Wight Festival. I’ve been to the Isle of Wight many times…. It’s exciting, to be honest, cause, you know, I didn’t think I’d ever get invited to do festivals. But, I seem to be getting on the list a bit now. So, that’s great.”

On a drunken karaoke romp with Kim Wilde:

“One of my favourite moments of doing karaoke was with the lovely and talented Kim Wilde and we got talking about alcohol… we got so drunk, I can’t remember what we sang. But, I remember it being an amazing evening. That’s all I can remember.”

KT Tunstall

“I’m Trying to Shine a Light on Women in the Studio Because it’s Really Rare”

KT Tunstall stopped to chat to Danielle Perry about the importance of recognising women in the studio, and the nostalgia of returning to Isle Of Wight for the first time in over 10 years…

On shining a light on women in the studio:

“I’m not quite sure what to do about production on this album – I’m still having a look around, looking for some ladies to choose from to be honest because it’s something I feel pretty passionate about. Certainly in the studio world, just to try and shine a light on more women being in the studio cause it’s really rare. For my third record I did a writing session with Linda Perry in LA and that was amazing. We wrote a couple of really good songs together. She’s the queen yeah she’s an amazing force in popular music she’s incredible.  So, just more of that please.”

Being back at the Isle of Wight Festival after ten years:

“It’s just amazing coming back and playing Isle of Wight because it’s at least 10 years since I played here. When that happens and you come back and play somewhere that you’ve played before ages ago, you just think about all the life and the music and the adventures that you’ve had. It’s mad.”

KEANE

Sitting with Sarah Champion before his Big Top performance, Keane joked they almost didn’t make it on site, after security didn’t recognise them!…

On trying to get into the festival, drummer Richard Hughes said:

“Well, we were just trying to get into the site and one of the security guys wouldn’t let us in. The thing is… things like that just get funnier and funnier the more they happen. Then the longer it goes on, the guy is just standing there and we’re just sitting in this bus and it just got funnier as the situation got more absurd. He said: ‘What time are you on?’ and we said: ‘11pm’ and he said: ‘Well that’s okay. You can go round the one way system again it’ll only take an hour and a half’… Not living the dream at all are we?!”

Fatboy Slim

Moments before his headline slot, Fatboy Slim spoke to Danielle Perry about being pranked by a Richard Branson wannabe about being the first DJ in space, and his bucket list (which includes wanting to play in a toilet)…

Fatboy Slim on the shelf life of his career:

“I’m just at a point in life where I’m kind of tremendously enthralled that I’m still allowed to do this but aware that in terms of shelf life and sell by dates the clock is ticking. So, I’m trying to cram in all the things that I haven’t done yet. I can occasionally get jaded about my musical career as I have been doing this for 35 years.”

On working with Julian Temple on Ibiza – The Silent Movie:

“He is one of the most iconic and talented documentary producers. Well obviously I know quite a lot about Ibiza, at least I thought I did until we started this film. Julian Temple has just been a director that I’ve always rated and the way he makes films is very similar to how I make records. He uses little found bits and then glues them all together and makes a kind of collage out of it. So, we got on really well. We have kind of got history going back through Glastonbury and everything.”

On completing his bucket list:

“A film sound track was definitely the last one on my printed list, but it just frees me up to think of more and more stupid things. I’m gonna play in a toilet this summer somewhere.”

Fatboy Slim on being fooled into thinking Richard Branson wanted him to be the first DJ in space:

“Yeah they did phone me up and pretend to be Richard Branson, very convincingly, and I actually agreed to do it. It’s true!”
