Until recently, when the Romans came with their axes, the world was some 90 per cent forest. Birds fled due to the lack of food, and the wind speed increased a few factors as if furious at mankind. Lisa O’Neill’s new single provokes thoughts of those days long gone, and our place in society in the modern world. Serving philosophical food for thought, O’ Neill performs such lines as ‘Feathered friend, dig up and resurrect me, I long to live among the song of birdies, A lawless league of lonesome, lonesome beauty, Skies and skies and skies above duty.‘ Orchestra and the comely voice of her young niece accompany her, leaving her listeners time to think back over the meditations she just gave. It is of note that Patrick Kavanagh’s prescient meditation on The Great Hunger served as the tracks prime inspiration.
To support Old Note, Lisa O’ Neill has announced a new record, ‘All Of This Is Chance’, set to be released on Rough Trade Records on 10th February 2023. The album lyrically branches off on the above themes, addressing meditations on wonder, fear of the suppression of the spirit, and the disconnect from the land, while buckets of musicians come in and out supporting her along the way. The sleeve of this album fittingly states ‘A dog sneezed on dandelion seeds‘, and as the singer says – ‘All Of This is Chance!‘
A new tour supporting the album was also announced this morning, the tickets are on sale here.
