5 Seconds Of Summer (5SOS) ‘Easier’ Single Review

‘A new era has begun and its grungier, edgier and more intense’

Teaming up with Charlie Puth and Tyan Tedder (One Republic) to write the track, 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) debuted new track ‘Easier’ alongside its steamy video across multiple streaming platforms.

Citing influences such as Nine Inch Nails and heavy-synth 80s bands such as Tears For Fears the new track Easier features an industrial depth from its rhythm section, with hard hitting drums from Ashton Irwin and an echoic bass from Calum Hood. Accompanying this, an intense melodic demonstration from guitarist Michael Clifford and a top range of mumbled to flawless falsetto vocals from Luke Hemmings. Whilst only a slight detour from 2018 release ‘Youngblood’ sonically this release, the first after signing with new label Interscope travels a more electronic avenue whilst still incorporating their pop punk roots.

The new edgier track is accompanied by a steamy video filmed in a candlelit cave, with crater-like alcoves engulfing the band in water, simulating the feeling of being trapped in a toxic relationship, the underlying message of the song. Additionally to this lead singer Hemmings appears chained inside the cave asking himself “Is it easier to stay or is it easier to go?”. Inspired by the 4 elements, the dark filtered video draws on components of earth, air, fire, and water presenting an explosive story which concludes with a burning mural of the bands individual totems, likely signifying rebirth, accrediting to the decision of deciding it’s “Easier to go”.

Easier debuted live Wednesday 29th at benefit event hosted by ‘Friends of Friends’ and featuring performances from 5SOS, All Time Low, and many more. Created by 5SOS as a vehicle for positive change in culture, art, and music Friends of Friends features a limited edition clothing line and a promised string of upcoming concerts to raise money for various charities, most recently LA based organisation ‘Safe Place For Youth’.

After just 4 days of tracking Easier has seen the highest debut of any song released throughout their entire career debuting at #19 in the UK, #22 on US pop radio, and #4 on worldwide iTunes chart. It’s easy to see why the song is so popular with its universal message and popular melodic style. This new era is set to captivate its audience, laying the groundwork for more upcoming music of the same evolution.

You can expect to see 5SOS playing their new explosive hit Easier at one of their festival appearances this summer and upcoming North America tour with The Chainsmokers from September – December later this year.
