Single review: slowthai – ENEMY

From lockdown in Northampton, slowthai shared ‘ENEMY” online last night, the first new music to come from the breakthrough British artist this year. The latest release from 25 year old rapper is like abrupt slap to the face. Starting out with a vocal sample of Matt Healy at the NME awards (where he famously tried to fight an audience member.), ‘Enemy’ then proceeds to rip speakers and hears slowthai’s ‘cannibal’ flow.

‘Enemy’ has a darker style of production. You can hear this in the distorted bass line and strange ad-libs that give you a feeling of uncertainty. It has a similar feel to tracks such T N biscuits’ and ‘Psycho’ with Denzel Curry. A small but nit picky criticism would be to make the track longer as it comes in at 2:19 and leaves you wanting just a little more.

It’s nearly a year since slowthai released his Mercury Prize nominated and unanimously acclaimed debut album – ‘Nothing Great About Britian’. Its clear to see that lockdown is not stopping slowthai from realizing big tunes and we look forward to hear what’s next.
